TV Meme: Day 30-Saddest Character Death

With some shows, it's virtually pointless to become attached to anyone, since characters can drop like flies (I'm looking at you 24) and when (not if) they eventually meet the reaper, you're saddened, but deal with the pain quickly and move on to guess who the next victim will be.

ER was never like that. Though plenty of deaths occurred, rarely were they of the main cast, as most of the staff at Cook County General left outside a body bag. Lucy Knight was not so lucky.

Lucy joined the staff at the beginning of Season 5 as an eager third year med student doing her ER rotation. She was a fantastic addition to the show as the new wide-eyed, inexperienced "kid" much like Carter was at the beginning of the series. And it was with a then-resident Carter that she had most of her interactions, both good and bad, but they eventually became good friends, even with a brief romance that ended almost before it began.

During the Valentine's Day episode of Season 6, a patient was admitted to the ER with symptoms that prompted Lucy to call for a psych consult, as she feared this seemingly normal law student in his mid-20s may have been having his first schizophrenic break. Toward the end of the episode, Carter looked at the board of ER patients and saw the same patient's name still up there, wondering why Lucy hadn't dumped him on Psych yet. Carter walked into the patient's room and suddenly, out of the shadows, the patient snuck up behind him, stabbing him in the back. Carter fell to the ground and, as the episode ended, he saw a pale and bloodied Lucy staring back at him in shock:

The next episode was dedicated to saving Carter and Lucy's lives, though only one of them made it. Lucy remained alive through most of the episode, being stabilized and operated on, but eventually died of complications, casting a dark cloud over the entire hospital.

Lucy wasn't on the show as long as most of the cast, but her young age, the surprise of the attack, her determination to help that patient, and the aftermath of Carter coping with the attack all played a large part in the overall sadness of her loss.

Congrats. This was a tough task, and my incessant ranting didn't help me tone down either. I shall miss it when it's gone...maybe.
