Hudson Hawk (No Spoilers)

*Sigh* It's Day 5 of Razzie Winners Week and I really miss you, John McClane.

The world's best cat burglar, Hudson Hawk, is released from prison, determined to go straight, when he immediately becomes a pawn in a plot to take over the world by stealing three original Da Vinci artworks.

I know this movie was not meant to be taken seriously, but that doesn't keep it from sucking, much like Disaster Movie, I would presume. I understand the concept of spoof movies, and they can be funny, but 98% of the time, they turn out to be roadkill.

The movie can't make up it's mind what it wants to be. Sometimes it's a dumb spoof, then turns serious for a few minutes, then becomes a live-action cartoon, and then it decides to do a musical number. One thing it's not is funny, though Bruce Willis did deliver a couple lines that made me chuckle. But I was so bored overall, I had to watch it in two separate sittings (a common thread for the films this week). I wish I could say this was just a paycheck flick for Bruce, but after doing the first two Die Hard flicks, and the fact that he co-wrote the script for Hudson Hawk, logic tells me that isn't the case. I see he hasn't tried his hand at writing since this incident, so at least he learned his lesson.

If you're really into spoofs (damn, I feel sorry for you), you might like this. I prefer my comedies to go beyond sight gags and raunchy dialogue. And I just have a personal rule that any film prominently featuring Sandra Bernhard in a supporting role should be burned from the history of cinema.

This is actually a total guilty pleasure for me. I've probably seen it 20 times. Don't ask why, I can't explain it. It's stupid, ridiculous, and the acting is pretty bad (particularly David Caruso). But I'd still watch it again. When Andie McDowall chirps like a dolphin I crack up.

I have movies like that too, Jess. But I couldn't wrap my head around this one. I think the Mayflower couple is what really put the final nail in the coffin for me. I actually liked Bruce's performance though.

David Caruso's acting bad?!?! Is that a joke? He doesn't say a word!

I love Hudson Hawk - how dare you compare it to garbage like Disaster Movie, even if it's not up your alley. Unimaginative crap like that has nothing on the Hawk, which despite its lovable badness, is clever and original, to say the least. I put it in the same category as Last Action Hero, a horribly misunderstood film that isn't nearly as good as it should have been, but also not nearly as bad as anyone makes it out to be. Both lie in my guilty pleasure Hall of Fame, too.

And Rachel, please list one instance where Hudson Hawk played it serious. That's my biggest gripe from your review.

Ooo, I hit a nerve:)

Fletch, "serious" is admittedly a poor choice of word. I didn't mean serious, as in drama, but what I meant was that at times, the movie almost seemed to be more of a straight comedy rather than the spoof/slap-stick that was the overall feel of the film. There weren't many instances, but I did notice one or two, and this may have been the whole two times I laughed.

I admit I've never liked slap-stick or spoof films, including Mel Brooks films. (Waits for the gasping and cursing to stop.) The only one that comes to mind is Spaceballs for some strange reason. I could watch that a million times. As for spoof, I like the first Austin Powers, but that's about it.

I guess I prefer genuine comedy with relatable characters rather than the obvious humor a third grader could easily understand and laugh at. Just me.
